Safety & Care

Are reusable ice cubes safe?

A practical host's guide to food-grade materials, toxicity, cleaning, and making your Glacee last for years.

What reusable ice cubes are made of

Most premium reusable ice cubes are made from food-grade silicone, BPA-free resin, or stainless-steel shells filled with a food-safe freezing gel. These materials are chosen because they stay cold longer than water ice, will not crack at freezer temperatures, and do not leach into your drink.

Glacee decorative ice is produced with food-safe, non-toxic resins and silicones. Every piece is sealed, smooth, and intended to be handled like glassware — elegant, reusable, and easy to rinse.

Are reusable ice cubes toxic?

When manufactured to food-grade standards, reusable ice cubes are not toxic. The risk appears with unbranded, imported, or unlabeled products that may contain off-grade plastics, dyes that bleed, or gel fillers not intended for food contact.

Look for

Food-grade, BPA-free, FDA- or LFGB-compliant labeling

Avoid

Unmarked plastic, strong chemical odors, leaking dye, or visible seams

Are reusable ice cubes dishwasher safe?

Many reusable ice cubes can go on the top rack of a dishwasher, but high heat and harsh detergents can shorten the life of decorative resin pieces. For Glacee, we recommend hand-washing with warm soapy water to preserve the finish and details. If you do use a dishwasher, place pieces on the top rack and skip the heated-dry cycle.

Always let reusable ice cubes dry completely before returning them to the freezer — trapped moisture can cause frost or odors.

How to clean and store reusable ice

  1. 01Rinse immediately after use to remove drink residue.
  2. 02Wash with mild dish soap and warm water. Use a soft brush for detailed shapes.
  3. 03Sanitize monthly with a dilute white-vinegar rinse if needed.
  4. 04Air-dry fully, then store in a clean, sealed bag or container in the freezer.

Product longevity

With proper care, reusable ice cubes last for years. Avoid dropping them on hard surfaces, do not microwave them to speed thawing, and keep them away from direct heat or sharp utensils. The better you care for them, the longer they keep their clarity and finish.

Child-safe sizing

Glacee Fête animal shapes are designed at 1.5" and 2" — large enough to remain visible in a cup and not pose a choking hazard. As with any drink accessory, we recommend adult supervision for children under five.

FAQ

Common safety questions

Yes. Glacee pieces are made from non-porous, food-grade silicone and sealed resin, so they don't absorb drink residue or harbor bacteria the way porous materials can. Rinse them with warm soapy water after each use, let them air-dry completely, and store them in a clean freezer container.
